Major Spoiler Alert: This is my recap of Where the crawdads sing, so i will include some spoilers
I loved this book so much, but unfortunately I could not read it in a day. It was very content heavy and I needed time after each section to process and reset my mental state.
I can say that this book showed how bad things that people do are on a spectrum. Almost everyone in this book did something that pissed me off and mainly it made me angry whenever anyone hurt Kya.
Characters:
Kya:
The tears that formed in my eyes whenever I think about Kya. Her innocent state being destroyed by everyone who leaves, hurts her, or treats her differently because she was different. Kya is the definition of being a product of her environment. She is a quiet girl that through the way people treated her became this girl who didn't talk to people but craved being able to talk and touch someone. As time goes on she learns to be independent and rely on no one.
Tate:
While he did things that pissed me off. I liked his unconditional love and dedication to Kya. I felt sad for him when his dad died, but it was a needed thing that brought him closer to Kya. Kya became his only family. His love showed when he deleted evidence that Kya killed Chase. Aside from the fact that he left her without a goodbye knowing that she had no one. He proved to be a good person that right his wrong. I also loved the fact that he lived longer than Kya because I don't think she could handle another loss.
Jumpin and Maple:
Absolutely loved them. They stood by Kya’s side the whole time and they treated her like a daughter. They also understood Kya because as colored people they were treated the same way as Kya.
Chase Andrews:
Absolute Filth. He is manipulative, evil, and a rapist. A womanizer, cheater, and an entitled brat. This is only just some descriptive words that fits Chase Andrews. The only thing that made me sad that he was killed was the fact that Kya was put on trial for his death. (Even if she did it)
The people of the town: They never gave her a chance and always judged her. They mocked and belittled Kya and judged her for being isolated.
Kya’s Siblings: I understand that they were abused, but they left kya. But every sibling was very young and could only think about surviving. I still think they should have taken Kya with them.
Plot
The plot was breathtaking. It included a lot of animal biology and science facts that I didn’t really need or care for , but it added to the plot and was beautifully woven into the story. I cried when Kya was released because it showed that someone from the jury: aka someone from the town had a conscience.
Based on this book I would read another book by Delia Owens.
