I had the opportunity to attend a Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church in Puerto Rico during my visit with family, and it was truly fascinating to immerse myself in a different cultural setting. Although I initially sought out an English-speaking congregation, I found myself in a Caribbean-cultured church, where the familiar tunes of songs took on unique and captivating tones. The experience not only introduced me to new songs but also allowed me to appreciate the diverse expressions of worship within this culturally vibrant community. Exploring a different religious community in this richly diverse land turned out to be an enriching and memorable experience.
Exploring a Different SDA Community:
Stepping into the SDA church in Puerto Rico unveiled a captivating fusion of faith and culture. Prior to this experience, I had been feeling spiritually drained in my own church, sensing a shift in dynamics. Desiring a time of refreshment, I attended this church without fully grasping its potential impact. For the first time in a while, the messages resonated without feeling tailored to attack members of the congregation. This experience helped me reconcile my thoughts about church, emphasizing the separation between the institution and my personal faith. It became clear that my faith was not defined by the church but by my personal connection and trust in God.
Leaving Puerto Rico, I made a personal commitment to embrace change and approach things differently. True to my promise, a significant shift occurred. While I acknowledge the importance of the church, I no longer prioritize it as the sole determinant of my faith. This change in mindset prompted me to delve into personal exploration—reading my Bible more and nurturing my relationship with God independently, free from external dictates. Breaking away from the notion that the church should dictate the entirety of my spiritual experience, I've discovered a profound connection with God that felt elusive in my previous approach. Attending church remains a part of my spiritual routine, but I now recognize it as just one facet of my spirituality. The mentality cultivated in Puerto Rico has undeniably been a spiritual saving grace for me.
Cultural Vibrancy in Worship:
The worship service itself unfolded as a vibrant celebration of cultural richness. The hymns' melodies resonated with the island's rhythm, and the congregation sang with passionate energy. Perhaps, as a visitor, I felt a genuine sense of relaxation, fully immersed in the worship and praise moments. During the prayer session, I had a memorable moment where I earnestly sought God's guidance for my spiritual journey.
Encountering this diverse church ignited a desire to explore more congregations distinct from my own. Although I haven't fully realized this goal yet, with the advent of a new year, I'm eager to continue my journey and visit more churches, broadening my spiritual experiences. There's ample time ahead to embrace this exploration.
Conclusion:
Exiting the Seventh-day Adventist church in Puerto Rico, I carried with me the resonance of a profound encounter with faith and culture. The warmth, vibrancy, and inclusivity of the Puerto Rican SDA community left an indelible mark, reinforcing the idea that in our shared human experience, connections forged through faith and culture are boundless and transformative.
